LPDAM CASE FILES: Progression of crime I always wonder how, or why people commit crimes. I know there is no one answer, or it would be solved. However, in your opinion, is it an institutional issue; a type of personality; or just by circumstance? there is no one answer to such a complex issue of why certain people are more prone to committing crimes. With that said, it is a combination of many factors that contribute to a reason why someone may or may not commit a crime. Some of these variables can be changed or altered through innovative techniques that may work within an individual’s personal environment. I think my pilot social work program is proving concepts can become reality. These defendants are worth our investment to have less victims in our society. As part of the social work program, we work with many repeat offenders at the district court level. We are seeing similarities within this population which I believe can help lower recidivism rates. A large majority of our clients are intellectually challenged or have mental health issues that often affect their response to a particular situation that results in a criminal complaint. Identifying these similarities allows us to move to the next step. Narrowing down the societal or institutional connections to a particular individual helps us gain trust and with moving out client forward in a positive direction. The root to many of the criminal allegations are directly associated with the Client’s responses to heightened situations that they often cause themselves. It may sound complicated, but we are proving crime can be curved. It’s an awesome feeling! I would say so. It is amazing that you are seeing positive results. Is it fair to say; you are customizing services for each defendant? It is exactly what we are doing, and with an 84% success rate – its undeniable! Our measurement is simple, but hard with individuals who have a history of repeatedly committing crimes - to keep them off the dockets for a 6-month period. Many have drug and alcohol issues that often stem from their mental health issues. More than 25% of our Client’s to date have been homeless. We help them build their confidence; acquire housing; and receive the services necessary to respond better to high anxiety situations. It is these life skills that provide the tools to curve future crime and allow a person the strength to be a contributor in our society. Most of my social work clients receive positive outcomes because the court sees the benefits of allowing a defendant to better themselves. If the person can stay off future criminal dockets, then we have less victims in our society. It is a win-win scenario. It is also important to note, that many of the social work clients receive other services that we work in conjunction with such as investigative services. This combination is quite powerful in the courtroom. At LPDAM.org, we offer a wide range of talent within the legal support service industry. I am just one of many who provide honest, quality work to our customers. “Remember, you’re in good hands with LPDAM!”
