Opening Statement – February 3rd Show on WCRN 830 AM
Good afternoon, and welcome to another edition of common-sense conversation for the common-sense citizen. I’m Joe Mangiacotti, and we have a packed show for you today. We’ll be diving into the real-world impact of tariffs, the National Day of Immigrants boycott, and the ongoing struggles of the Democratic Party as they try—and fail—to find their footing in the post-2024 landscape.
Let’s start with tariffs. You know, the mainstream media and the political elite scoff every time Trump mentions tariffs, but here’s the reality: they work. Trump has been masterful at using tariffs not just as an economic tool but as a negotiation tactic. Take what’s happening with Mexico and Canada right now—just the mere suggestion that tariffs might be imposed or increased forces our neighbors to the north and south to rethink their trade practices. The United States has long been on the losing end of trade deals that put American workers last, but Trump has flipped that script. His willingness to use tariffs as leverage, combined with his ability to read a room and play hardball, has led to actual, tangible benefits for American industries and workers. And what’s truly remarkable is how even a comment, just a mention from him, sends other nations scrambling to adjust their policies. That’s the kind of leadership we haven’t seen in decades.
Now, let’s shift to today’s so-called National Day of Immigrants and the boycott that’s being pushed. This movement traces back to 2017, when activists first staged “A Day Without Immigrants” to protest Trump’s immigration policies. The idea is that immigrants—both legal and illegal—would stay home from work and not spend money to showcase their economic impact. But let’s call this what it really is: a politically motivated stunt designed to push an open-borders narrative. No one is denying that immigrants contribute to our economy—legal immigrants who follow the system have always been a backbone of American society. But what the left won’t tell you is the strain that unchecked illegal immigration places on our resources, schools, hospitals, and law enforcement. And let’s be real—this isn’t just about immigrants making a statement. This is about progressive activists weaponizing immigration for their own political gain.
And speaking of political dysfunction, let’s talk about the Democrats. They are still reeling from the last election, completely rudderless, and unable to agree on messaging. The infighting is on full display, with no clear leader stepping up to unify their fractured party. Every time they lose, they turn to the same tired excuses—racism, misogyny, voter suppression—rather than looking inward and admitting that their policies don’t resonate with the average American. Now, they’re stuck in a circular firing squad, unable to even explain their own gender balance rules. One minute they’re demanding absolute equality, the next they’re contradicting themselves, unable to keep up with their own shifting definitions. It’s chaos, pure and simple.
The reality is that while they’re busy tearing themselves apart, Trump and his policies are still shaping the national conversation. Whether it’s tariffs, trade, or immigration, his leadership continues to make waves. Meanwhile, the Democrats are stuck in a spiral of self-inflicted wounds, unable to connect with the very voters they claim to champion.
So, stick around—we’ve got a lot more to break down today. We’ll take your calls, we’ll dig into the facts, and as always, we’ll cut through the noise with a dose of common sense. This is Joe Mangiacotti, and you’re listening to WCRN 830 AM. Stay tuned!
